A Digital Signature Certificate is issued for a fixed validity — usually 1, 2 or 3 years. Once it expires, you can no longer use it to sign filings, so renewing before expiry avoids last-minute disruption to GST, MCA or income tax deadlines.

This guide explains when and how to renew a DSC, and whether you can reuse your existing crypto token.

What is DSC renewal?

DSC renewal is the process of obtaining a fresh certificate with a new validity period. Technically the old certificate cannot be extended — a new one is issued, and it can usually be downloaded onto your existing token.

Renewal requires fresh KYC/video verification, just like a new issuance, because the Certifying Authority must re-confirm your identity.

Renew early to avoid missing deadlines

Step-by-step process

  1. Note the expiry date. Check your certificate's validity and start renewal a few days before it expires.
  2. Apply for a new DSC. Place a renewal/fresh order for the same class and validity.
  3. Complete KYC. Finish Aadhaar/PAN KYC and video verification again.
  4. Download to the token. Download the renewed certificate onto your existing crypto token.
  5. Re-register on portals. Update/register the renewed DSC on MCA, GST, income tax or DGFT as needed.
